    Medical Mission 2: Overcoming Adversity

No one can ever predict how life goes. Just when you think everything was strategically and methodically thought out, or even well predicted, Murphy’s Law runs right through the wall you build up around your precious plans and sweeps the rug right from right under your feet. As we embarked on Medical Mission 2, Murphy certainly crept in!

Everything was perfectly aligned. We had more volunteers coming to help on this trip, we became a little wiser and planned on staying the night, all food and water was planned in advance, and it was time to rock’n’roll. With only a few days to go, the headman of Gari Village called Fafa with unexpected news. There was a funeral occurring over the weekend (which, in Ghana, is quite an event) and wanted to cancel the mission because the whole village is required to attend and it’s an event that lasts for a long time. We also had 6 volunteers drop, 2 more people in the village pass away the day before the mission, and the boat guys increased our boat fair without warning.

However, there is no one better than Fafali Nukunu for the job. In a funeral, all of the adults are required to attend. So instead, this time our mission was entirely child focused and Fafa wonderfully made things happen even short-handed. We brought them reading materials, coloring books, pencils, candies, clothing, mosquito nets, vitamin A, iron supplements, lunch (pasta and sausages), and snacks (boiled eggs), in addition to the medical attention. Unlike other areas in Ghana where most children have enough to eat, most of these children have never had pasta or sausage so it was a treat we were excited to share!

We split the 80+ children into two groups. One group for screening and one group for teaching. Volunteers read to the older kids, taught them to read, and gave to kids in younger classes activity books to solve basic math problems and color. Our volunteers also brought out bubbles and stickers for the kids and they were so excited. The children were so happy in the midst of a hard time in the village.

Our volunteers consisted of 2 doctors, 1 physician assistant, 1 ENT specialist, 1 midwife, 2 librarians, 5 nurses, and 1 photographer. Everyone was provided with a room to stay overnight, but some volunteers decided to sleep outside in the open, so everyone followed suit.

The next morning, the adults started to come in to be screened because they knew we were present during the funeral, and we screened as many as we could before everyone headed out to be back in Hohoe by 10am.

To our understanding, one of the women that died the day before was our previous client. She was buried the day of the screenings with the original funeral. We had referred and encouraged her to go to the hospital because she was severely anaemic and needed a hemotransfusion. According to others in the village, she didn’t go due to lack of funds. The nearest hospital where she could have received this service was 2.5 hours away.

The entire trip was fulfilling and turned out beautifully, despite hardship starting out. The children were happy, taken care of, learned new things, and we were able to still help some of the adults. Please consider supporting us to help us prevent more villagers from passing away due to lack of health care! None of this is possible without you.

Around 5:00 a.m., twelve brave and selfless individuals gathered in Hohoe, Volta Region, for what was a seemingly risky mission. These volunteers knew nothing of what was to come, how far they would travel, who they would meet, and why they were meeting before the sun kissed the sky.

These doctors, nurses, social workers, etc. all loaded up into a small van heading towards Jasikan, to eventually arrive at Abotoase. Potholes upon potholes made the 2.5 hour trip less than desirable. However, once arrived in Abotoase, you could feel the sense of excitement rise amongst the volunteers, paired with a little bit of nervousness. It was market day. You could hear the hawkers and buyers left and right as the volunteers made their way to the shores of Volta Lake. Everyone knew this was the final leg of their journey to the unknown.

One by one, each volunteer loaded into small, wooden canoes. They were given life jackets and the boat operators started leading the way to the final destination: Gallikope (Gari Village). Excited, nervous, and ready, our volunteers were on their way!

Everyone arrived about 1.5 hours later to the village and slowly peeled out of the canoes onto the shores of Gallikope. The group was then escorted by a woman to the chief’s palace, followed by greetings and pleasantries. The efforts made by the assembly man and town leaders were impressive. Shortly after, children started flocking and we made breakfast for them.

Medical examinations began after everyone ate. We screened 15 men, 68 women, and 53 children throughout the day – even though many of the adolescents were gone because it was market day. Throughout the examinations, mothers were multitasking with making sure their children were in line while they were making afternoon meals.

Our team was able to identify, diagnose, and treat multiple individuals with Bilharzia (part of our mission). Most of the children were malnourshished, anaemic, or had some form of fungal skin disease, and we were able to provide immunizations.

The community was immensely thankful and even went ahead to cook food for us (even though we already had food and water provided for our volunteers). Everyone headed back out on the canoes before it got too dark because some of our volunteers needed to get back to job obligations.

Our team consisted of 2 doctors, 1 physician assistant, 4 nurses, 1 community health nurse, 2 librarians, and 2 social workers. Some even traveled as far as from Accra before the mission even started, which was an additional 5 hours.

Our first medical mission was a blessing and only the beginning of what is to come. Mother’s Heritage International is immensely grateful for the time sacrificed and the expertise given by our volunteers. We are also very grateful for being so well accommodated by Gari Village, and huge thank you to Fafali Nukunu for so beautifully orchestrating everything! We cannot wait for what is next!

We all know Fafa has had a strong passion for reaching out in her community throughout her life, but there is a lot more to her passion than meets the eye.

Born in 1993, this now 24 year old is the first of 4 other children in her immediate family. Her parents moved around a lot and wanted her to receive a stable education, so she lived with both of her maternal and paternal grandparents during her childhood. Experiences from living with family members sparked a fire within her that would later give birth to her passion for social justice and education for young girls. By age 12, she new she was going to build a non-profit one day.

Since then, she has not only created programs that help children afford writing materials and help young girls support each other and challenge the status quo, she is also a gold award winner for the Duke of Edinburgh’s award for young people, helped arrest and find resources to persecute 2 rapists (AND support for the victims and families), conducted health screenings at her church and neighborhood at home, supports 2 high school students, and so much more.

Today she is a registered nurse that dreams of traveling the world, featuring in a Hollywood movie, and perhaps studying at Harvard Law. We are immensely grateful to have her on our team and look forward to big things.

    Happy Birthday, Fafa!

Enam’s story is only one of many . . .

    [/fusion_text][fusion_separator style_type=”single solid” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” sep_color=”#9571b7″ top_margin=”0″ bottom_margin=”30px” border_size=”3px” icon=”” icon_circle=”” icon_circle_color=”” width=”200px” alignment=”center” /][fusion_text]

When Enam was only 8 years old, she was sent to Lake Volta to stay with a very distant relative. During this time, it was normal for people to go this area of Ghana in her community. Little did she know, her life was about to change forever.

She worked processing fish from the lake while living with her relative. Over time, she began to receive attention from a boat owner. Very young, uneducated and lonely, Enam was taken under his wing as his own girlfriend. He received free sex from this young child, and she, affection, with the promise of a mobile phone and extra change. She became pregnant by the age of 13 and became described as a wayward child.

Enam was unaware at the time, but she had also contracted the Bilharzia disease while working on the lake, which then developed complications in pregnancy and led to a still birth at 13 years old. She had no medical help, had never been to any antenatal class, and had no idea why she had the complications she had.

Now, she is 19 years old and living in the Volta Region on the coast where we will reach out. Enam has a 3 month old baby, who’s father is another fisherman (he has no contact with her any longer). She helps drag fishing nets on the beach and in return receives leftover fish as a means of survival, her baby is very malnourished, and she has no access to resources to help herself out of the only life she has known, especially after being considered a wayward child in the community.

Enam’s biggest dream now is to give her son the life she has never had. She dreams of him going to school one day and living a happy life.

*Enam wishes to remain anonymous, so we have omitted an actual her picture from this post.

    Why is her story important?

    [/fusion_text][fusion_separator style_type=”single solid” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” sep_color=”#9571b7″ top_margin=”” bottom_margin=”30px” border_size=”3″ icon=”” icon_circle=”” icon_circle_color=”” width=”200px” alignment=”center” /][fusion_text]

Her story is important because a lot of the hardship in her life could have been prevented, and her life WILL change.

Enam is exactly the type of woman that would benefit from the services and outreach of Mother’s Heritage. She is dragging nets, day by day as speak, unaware how much her life is going to change in the future . . . and she’s not the only one. By providing the opportunity to teach vocational skills to women like her, she and others will be able to survive and give her son the care he needs and a better future than hers. Through community education on topics such as: HIV/Aids, sex ed, nutrition, etc. our hope is to prevent some lives from some of the negative turns they would have taken otherwise, and ultimately improving communities as a whole, little by little.
